Medan, INFOAKTUALNEWS.COM – Lecturers from the Department of Architecture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted the first phase of socialization for the 2022 community service program titled “Community Empowerment in the Implementation of Urban Architecture in the Medan Maimun Area.” This program adopts the “Little Turkey” theme, planned for the Maimun Palace area along Jalan Mahkamah.

The design proposal is also expected to enhance economic cooperation between North Sumatra and Turkey. The community service team consists of Prof. Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM; Dr. Wahyuni Zahrah, ST., MS; and Dr. Ar. Achmad Delianur Nasution, ST., MT., IAI., AA., IAP, supported by assistant lecturer Nursalsabila Puren, S.Ars. Also present were Arwynta Nasution, ST (Sub-Coordinator of Infrastructure and Regional Affairs III, BAPPEDA Medan), Sri Wardhany, SE (Subdistrict Secretary), and Muhammad Ridwan, SE (Kepling 7).

Active students from the USU Architecture Department also participated: Muhammad Aria Sitorus, Ashria, Muhammad Habib Auliya, Firda Ristika, Cindy Claudia Siregar, and Citra Dewi. Fifteen residents living along Jalan Mahkamah attended the socialization.

During the session, Prof. Nurlisa Ginting explained that the design plan aims to present a Turkish ambiance in Medan. Dr. Wahyuni Zahra added that this design would enrich existing tourism options through the “Little Turkey” approach. Dr. Achmad Delianur Nasution further emphasized that the design could increase community income by establishing a strong Turkish brand identity.

The program aims to improve residents' welfare and raise awareness of the importance of developing urban spaces with economic potential. The design also incorporates the “eyes on the street” concept, where active surroundings help enhance neighborhood security.

The team clarified that no existing shops would be demolished. Instead, shops would be rearranged and supported with better spatial design. Program outcomes will be submitted to the Medan City Government for further discussion with PT KAI.

Arwynta stated that the program brings many benefits: “This program supports MSME development and helps promote cultural heritage such as Maimun Palace, the Grand Mosque, and Sri Deli Lake.”

This program represents a positive step in realizing Medan as a collaborative city and provides opportunities for residents to help beautify their surroundings. (IA-RF)
