suaramedannews.com – Medan – Lecturers from the Department of Architecture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted the second phase of the 2022 community service socialization titled “Community Empowerment in the Implementation of Urban Architecture in the Medan Maimun Area.” This second phase focused on presenting design proposals created by the implementing team and was held on Tuesday, 23 August 2022, at the Masjid Village office in Medan.

The proposed designs are expected to generate ideas, inspire creativity, and provide education to residents. Community participation is essential to ensure that the designs can be realized. The designs not only aim to enhance the aesthetics of Jalan Mahkamah but also to improve the local economy. Once the area is well-organized, both domestic and international tourists are expected to visit in greater numbers. Furthermore, workshops and training will be provided to improve community skills, including metalworking, product quality enhancement, culinary standardization, and sewing.

The second phase was attended by the implementation team—Prof. Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM; Dr. Wahyuni Zahrah, ST., MS; Dr. Ar. Achmad Delianur Nasution, ST., MT., IAI., AA., IAP—and assistant lecturer Nursalsabila Puren, S.Ars. Also present were Willy Irawan, ST, M.Ec.Dev (Head of Infrastructure and Regional Affairs, Bappeda Medan), and Arwynta Nasution, ST (Sub-Coordinator of Infrastructure and Regional Affairs III, BAPPEDA Medan), along with Village Head Syawaluddin, ST, and Village Secretary Sri Wardhany, SE. USU Architecture students also assisted in the implementation.

In her remarks, Prof. Nurlisa Ginting explained that the second phase aims to ensure that residents fully understand the proposed designs. She added that one sample product, such as a public bench, would be produced to demonstrate the concept. Dr. Achmad Delianur emphasized that the design can increase community income by strengthening Turkish brand identity. The area will be redesigned with improved parking, a Hagia Sophia–inspired gateway, lighting arrangements, corridor design, street furniture, vegetation, and product quality training.

Village Head Syawaluddin welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism despite the lengthy process. He requested a design flyer and one model shop to guide other residents.

Willy Irawan, representing the Medan City Government, expressed appreciation for the initiative and stated that the plan aligns with the Mayor’s vision of a collaborative city. The design proposal to transform Jalan Mahkamah into “Little Turkey” is expected to create a new tourism destination in Medan.

Residents welcomed the proposed redesign, and it is hoped that further steps will be taken so that the designs can be fully realized beyond the community service stage. (Harianto)
